I think the root of it is that the financial incentives for Valve and Epic are completely different at this point. Valve is entirely independent where as Epic has taken on lots of outside investment.

One of the problems with "indies will save games/animation/<insert medium here>" is no one has any fucking money Most people who would want to fund an interesting project do not have the resources to sustain the money faucet needed for any long term projects
