It is, to be frank, fucking embarrassing and shameful that western developers making 'gritty' 'realistic' games set in WWII cannot summon up the courage to address these events even half as directly.

This is an full on alternate world, so here it is 'Darcsens' (who are portrayed as ethnically distinct group (they face prejudice even in the 'good guy' societies) who are hunted and rounded up by the Nazi stand-ins ('East Europan Imperial Alliance') and send to camps. The analogy here is blunt.

The genre we're talking about with Valkyria Chronicles if you haven't played it, this is a strictly-no-blood, guns-go-pow-pow with comic book effects kind of game. Like, PG-13 at most. And the main characters encounter a brutal forced labor camp clearly intended to evoke the concentration camps.

Legitimately, Valkyria Chronicles - the anime-alternate-history-WWII-with-magical-girls is 1) a great game, go play it but 2) better about addressing the real nature of the Nazi regime than 95+% of 'gritty' modern realistic WWII games. Which is nuts, the bar is just...so low.
