Matthew Shepard died on October 12th in 1998, 28 years ago. His ashes were interred at Washington National Cathedral 20 years later, in 2018, because before Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson offered the Cathedral's crypt, his family had no place for him that would be safe from desecration.

I will be forever grateful for the perspective, somehow, that Judy Shepard gave me (and countless others) in a way that so many of us didn't even know we needed. And I will always remember and cherish Matthew — and the legacy he left — despite never having had the privilege of meeting him.
