My only positive copyediting experience is with SIAM and IMA. For all other publishers, it is always a guess whether they introduce more errors than they fix.

For the first part we don’t need publishers any more. Open infrastructures can easily be built if research councils want to. For the latter, having networks of trust is one possible option. But we need to start experimenting and through getting things wrong at first get to a solution.

Publishers traditionally have two roles 1. Organising the publication and archival of items of output. 2. Establishing seals of trust. We know that an annals paper is good because it appeared there.
