Some NIMBYs think of themselves as on the left and others on the right, but they are all motivated by a combination of racism (can't ruin the character of the neighborhood), greed (more housing makes my asset worth less), and a selfish refusal to reinvest in the society they benefitted from.

Their faces when I say, "You chose this neighborhood because it would be a good place to raise your kids, right? Then why is it okay for nobody with kids to be able to afford to live in your neighborhood?" Housing can build community for all or wealth for some, but it can't do both.
