Every single person I know who went no contact with a parent (including me) made that choice after a long, fraught process of trying to call them in. I have my own life to live, and I don't want to waste any more of it on someone who is draining my spirit.

Back in ye olden dark ages, you could "cut off" your parents by moving a few states away, having an infrequent regular expensive phone call, and maybe seeing them annually max.
