Today I passed by Ushigoe Jinja and asked the shrine staff where I could find the war-damaged tree featured in my book and the young guy looked at the photo and the text for a long time but he didn’t know. So I took a photo of this gingko instead. It felt apropos.

Sensoji today, through the lens of a blackened and hollowed out gingko. I never noticed the tree before, as it is off to the side in a smoking area, but now I’ll never see these grounds the same again, because once you see one fire-damaged tree at Sensoji, you see them all. And they are EVERYWHERE.
