And since I was alive and online beforehand - a *lot* of Westerners online convinced themselves that Gaza was a literal concentration camp instead of a horribly oppressed area under theocratic militia rule, and thus thought it literally couldn’t get worse. And then it did and they can’t process it.

They all know that their arguments, followed to their logical conclusion, would require them to cheer on Israeli mass murder (“victims can’t be blamed for what they do in response”) but of course they can't say that so they have to come up with some theory for why Israeli civilian life doesn't count
