It’s a danger and it has happened before. In 1975 the Australian Defence/Intelligence structure was loyal to the US/Western World Defence/Intelligence/Corporate network rather than to the elected government. There was knowledge beforehand in Corporate US that something was going to happen.

I really struggle to understand Defence. They use the term “sovereign” so much it’s like they have a weird form of Tourette’s, and yes, Defence is a hotbed of unreconstructed far right politics. But the cognitive dissonance is truly stunning, and they get very uncomfortable when you challenge them.
