The ray gun predates the laser by decades. H.G. Wells imagined the Heat-Ray in 1897; Garrett P. Serviss followed with a handheld “disintegrator” in 1898. By the 1930s, ray pistols were a sci-fi staple. The first working laser? Not until 1960. #PhasersToStun
