Cerveza and cerveja, Spanish and Portuguese for 'beer', descend from Latin cervēsia, a word adopted from a Celtic language. One of the oldest examples of cervēsia is in fact in a specifically Celtic context, when Pliny the Elder mentions "cervēsia and many types [of drink] in Gaul" (NH 22).
