It is not my experience that AI doesn't know how to program in R (in the last six months with frontier models, specifically). The terseness and lack of state in R's statistical modeling machinery offers far fewer "agent degrees of freedom" which I've found means they are less likely to wander astray

This feeling got way worse at #PositConf2026. PRs I opened at #PositConf2025 were still open. A keynote had "I don't write code anymore" as the (triumphant?) takeaway. The most famous R programmer had a talk about a thing he vibe coded in Rust.
