It feels so backwards to focus primarily on *hiring* world-class talent. I would much rather build a world-class environment that brings out the best in everyone. When you can do that, hiring world-class talent basically always happens. It's beautiful and also far healthier for everyone involved.

I was actually just discussing this concept with a CxO the other day. Hiring the perfect 7+/-2 team is, counterintuitively, a *massive* liability to a company. No team lasts forever, and magic teams can't be replaced. Instead, I like to focus on building great systems that *produce* great people.

But nope! Mostly what we're witnessing is the compound interest of advantage. If you run an engineering org, stop competing for the already pedigreed, and build an org that rewards curiosity, effort, hard work, teamwork, and caring, as well as brains. Build your own fucking pedigree.

The self-selecting and self-reinforcing nature of pedigree makes us believe that it was predetermined and reflective of individual merit. Today's Ivy Leagues and FAANG employees are like medieval nobility. They look taller, faster, better equipped than the peasants, so we assume they deserve it.
