Together, these data show that lack of fetal movement impairs skeletal development, but this can be rescued by timed maternal exercise. We are excited about this as a model system to study mechanobiology of development that may have therapeutic impact in human fetal akinesia.

Lastly, we performed a final experiment to isolate the effects of mechanical loading, per se. We cultured explanted forelimbs of wild-type and Spd mice in a bioreactor for direct, dynamic mechanical. We found that dynamic loading restored joint morphogenesis ex vivo.

Using a mouse model of fetal akinesia, the muscle-less Spd embryo, we found that maternal exercise rescues both bone and joint development, and prevents disuse-induced resorption of the deltoid tuberosity, a hallmark of mechanoregulated morphogenesis.
