Super Mario Bros 2 (NA, Oct-9 1988) and Super Mario Bros 3 (Japan, Oct-23 1988) were released only two weeks apart. The sprites for SMB 2 were very likely developed *after* SMB 3’s sprites! (Thanks @heyphilsummers.bsky.social)
