Handheld and stand-mounted cameras slowly became the industry norm, but "footies" were still being made into the 1950s. Fun fact: The last fully foot filmed movie released by a major studio was Alfred Hitchcock's REAR WINDOW.

It's called film "footage" because camera operators initially held the cameras with their feet. That changed after a film shoot in 1931, when an operator got a foot cramp and was forced to hold the camera in his hands. The "footage" he got that day was extraordinary. That man's name? Hans Cameraman.
