Also, Peter Jackson's very low-budget debut Bad Taste (1987) has lots of gunplay but all the guns were replicas Jackson built himself and the muzzle flare was all simulated via fiddly in-camera double exposure effects. Again, no-one really needs guns on-set.

Folk were rightly griping about the awfulness of some of the CGI in Escape from LA when it opened, nut I don't recall anyone there ever complaining about the digital muzzle flare effects used to film gunplay in some scenes. We haven't needed real guns in movies for decades.
