It’s like a less efficient cracker. You use it to gently bust up the shell. No fucking clue why people prefer them! I was served a Caribbean king crab with a mallet once and the waiter came to my table and busted the center of the crab with the mallet. I was pissed. All that shell in my meat!

Never in my fucking life have I understood what the hell a mallet is supposed to be for. Crackers I get, sure, sometimes I need some leverage to put an initial crack in a hard claw (usually for lobsters). But a mallet? Isn't that basically guaranteed to make a loud embarrassing mess?
