I’ve always loved the bits of King’s books that are from the perspective of The Shop or other govt agencies. Even though they’re frequently unsympathetic/villains they’re never cartoon characters like the military industrial complex is in knock offs like Stranger Things.

Big problem with "having it both ways" modern American culture: main characters who are troubled low status figures who nevertheless are very good looking and cool and have very powerful friends. A passive aggressive culture that demands your sympathy but could wipe you out in an eyeblink.
