It's also problematic that, at least here in Kansas, property taxes are taxed twice a year. So if you own a higher value house you get a bill for few thousand twice a year. It's easier for folks to accept that in monthly mortgage payments. The bigger number shocks them.

When we paid off our house, I remember getting a letter from the mortgage company saying, among other things. "YOU HAVE TO PAY YOUR PROPERTY TAXES YOURSELF NOW." I guess that's not enough for some people?
