One conclusion I drew was that a reform movement has to confront the public with a contradiction that it has been willing to ignore up to that point, to make it so vivid that it's impossible to maintain both the status quo and their self-image. That's a lot harder today; new tactics are needed.

Given our changed social and cultural context and changed media environment, King style movements are dramatically less effective unless they break from the traditional structure of King’s non-violence and take advantage of the unique structure of contemporary society to accomplish their aims.

In short, the King era non-violent protests relied on a mass media environment still in it’s infancy, the continued presence of public intellectuals and public intellectual debate, and the willingness of this infant media apparatus to broadcast events generally absent polarized framing as tools.
