For RUH, I'm within the city so not even rural, but going by bus would take 1hr longer return, out from work, *if* both needed buses were on time/timed right, and would cost twice as much. If taking someone else... Big gap between the options for demand side choices. (Bike only option some cases)

Think you’re overlooking the charm of (some) London suburbs. I prefer living in Bristol, obv, but also enjoyed being in my bit of Zone 4 west London, had an old-fashioned quality you don’t get from suburbs in many cities
