Curious about how things get built — especially trades and apprenticeships. Currently learning about the journey from apprentice to journeyman. Here to listen and learn.

@curiouscat1385.bsky.socialI live with a tradesman. HVAC A.S. from local Uni. Then Journeyman Electrical, Master Electrician to Inspector. The hours of school, apprenticeship and CE is impressive. Intellect in trades shouldn’t be discounted. He was a bored math maj in college.
Show PostExcept its really not actually because the trades are an Old Boys' Club full of conservative Baby Boomers and Gen-X'ers who have to sign off your paperwork for your apprenticeship hours to "count", so effectively taking an apprenticeship means subjecting yourself to Direct Conservative Control.
Show Postanyway time for a Real Life Sparrow Update (tm) I'm... Less than 200 hours away from fulfilling my trades apprenticeship program requirements. Holy fuck. I'm almost a real electrician.
Show PostThey were big on making noise about it but short on actually addressing the issues in the trades with apprenticeship that were maintaining those numbers. I had a lot of friends fighting to get hours and sign-offs because employers wanted to avoid paying journeyman wages.
Show PostMy Son went to College to be a teacher. He also Apprenticed to be an Electrician. He made twice as much as an Apprentice Electrician than as a Teacher. College cost a lot of money. He got paid to be an Apprentice and his Boss paid for the 2000 hours of schooling. $50,000 base pay. Non union.
