My mom couldn't bring herself to go no contact with her mom, but she really dialed it back in the last few years. My aunts had even more reason, but also never did. It didn't matter, all my grandmother's friends understood them to be terrible daughters who didn't care about their mom.

As a therapist I can tell you a lot more people are maintaining ties with abusive parents than are going no contact with them.

One thing you learn from reading the academic literature on parental estrangement is that it's rarely *just* about events from childhood. Most adults are willing to reconcile with their problematic parents as long as they can acknowledge their mistakes and own up to them. A lot of them refuse.
