A fun fact about neutrinos is that they come in three “flavors” (types) and also in three masses and you would think that this means each flavor has its own mass and you would be absolutely wrong about that.

We know that a neutrino can be an electron neutrino or a muon neutrino or a tau neutrino and we know that neutrinos have tiny masses and that there are different mass states but the mass states and the flavor states don’t line up. Each mass state is a superposition of flavor states and vice versa.

So when a neutrino is just flying through space unimpeded it has a mass but it is “oscillating” among the different flavors and it doesn’t have a defined flavor until it interacts with something in a way that gives the flavor away. Neutrinos are slippery little things!
