The Nightjar in question being John Saddler’s The Troubles, a beautifully calibrated and poignant short story of borders real and unreal. Packs an incredible amount of feeling into its short span and carries it with tremendous restraint and grace. One of my new favourites, I think.

Dragged myself off the sofa to read one of the latest Nightjars at one of my usual spots. Fatigue all morning and yesterday afternoon, unrelieved by an early night. The only trigger I can think of was the writing. Sometimes the cause is obvious, sometimes it’s totally obscure.
