It's the same approach as Confederacy, which is that education is a commodity available to those with means, and state-subsidized education at public universities should be limited to the ruling class. Universal public schools and land grant colleges exist because of secession and abolition.
Show PostThat's what their argument was in the John's Hopkins case...by focusing on helping lower incomes, they're actually helping Black folks. Can't do that!
Show Postthe other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.
Show Post(all of this would be news to the authors of the 14th amendment btw but then originalism is a tendency designed to reify hierarchies of status and thus they dispense with it when it comes to equal protection jurisprudence)
Show Posti have said this before but “It is not permissible under the 14th Amendment for the state to alleviate racial inequality” is basically a version of Plessy v. Ferguson, which held that the 14th Amendment was not meant to equalize social relations. bsky.app/profile/mike...
