"Practiced efficiency" is one of those descriptions that as a narrator you notice gets used reflexively and repeatedly and in weird places where it doesn't make sense, like a nervous tic. Are people really walking down the stairs with "practiced efficiency"? Drying their hands? Eating their meals?
