I went fish shopping in Paris for my colleague's aquarium. I was nervous about my French. Then I heard the owner speak Cantonese, so I spoke to him in Cantonese too. When I learned he was from Shanghai, we switched to Mandarin. It's good to be multilingual, even if it's not the right language. 😅

Like as a postdoc you're mentoring undergrad and grad students, possibly writing your own grants as PI, writing papers, reviewing, often doing work within professional organizations. The only thing you are not doing, generally and *pointedly*, is teaching classes. But only in 2 year increments.
