26 hours after the #venezuela #earthquake, foreign search and rescue teams have arrived. the situation in La Guaira (the coastal state next to Caracas that holds the airport) is dire. almost every building has fallen down. I hope they can rescue as many as they can, but it’s too late for some.

when I say dire, I mean that these teams are giving instructions via social media so people on the ground can facilitate their job when they arrive, marking places with spray paint, for example. but friends, all we have is sunlight for half the day and despair to share.

people are literally breaking their hands open on the rubble to take out people screaming their last breath. they’re using their phone flashlights, man. that’s all they have. no equipment, just some rope and the desire to help, because all we have is each other, and we show up.

the destruction is so complete in La Guaira that it looks like it got bombed. My neighbors (who have bikes and are young) just left to help because they can’t do nothing. I know this experience will change them, but I’m sure they’ll help so many people.

Now, what to do? I’ve been compiling/investigating links and legitimate places to donate to, and we’re also doing a local drive to get the bare necessities to those who have lost everything. I’ll let you know tomorrow if you wanna help out. Can’t just sit at home and cry.
