Day 2 of the UCU workers' strike at the University of Edinburgh. The 1,800 jobs UCU estimates will be cut is unprecedented in Scottish higher education. It is happening in the wealthiest Scottish university, and the third richest in the UK, currently sitting with over £3billion reserves.

Everyone one else thinks LLMs are the future. Ed’s the only one pointing out the physical limitations they are running up against. I mean, Oracle just realised there isn’t enough power to run this stuff. Ed has been saying this for months. Ignore is a bit strong. I’d listen to both sides.

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!
