Interestingly, you can walk between these raindrops by working at a big enough company or having access to enough generational wealth that you become a lightning rod of opportunity, which suggests the group really has absolutely zero fucking principles. Everyone else are subject to purity tests.

The worst of it comes when someone who does not embody the group's moral and/or aesthetic values experiences some kind of success, or when someone just hasn't figured out the etiquette or ... well, really, just isn't cool enough to hang with the cool kids. Because it's not really all that inclusive.

Which is no surprise, for sure, but art scenes also present a veneer of inclusivity and the appearance of celebration of success that's just not real. When someone succeeds, when someone gets lucky, when someone has something someone else doesn't have, the envy and resentment and loathing comes out.

Really though, I ended up finding the whole thing corrosive. Art scenes have a tendency to be very Insidiously competitive, where relationships and social standing and the measure of your worth as an individual depends on creative and professional output, and above all what opportunities you offer
