there is a piece to be written about this "no contact" as a very specific kind of moral panic about status, intergenerational mobility, and maybe dementia. because it is wild how much this no contact thing riles up older people.

My conservative in-laws are less tight-fisted but it's more "we sacrificed a lot of our lives for all this money specifically so we could spend it on our kids & grandkids." In both instances, there's a definite undercurrent of worry abt what they're leaving behind for us to deal with, society-wise.
Show PostIt’s been long enough that I can talk about this vaguely. A family friend refused cancer treatment. He didn’t want medical costs to drain his retirement. He was obsessed with taking care of his wife and two kids. He died less than 6 months after telling us that. Few things radicalized me more.
