@osisaf.bsky.social@osisaf.bsky.social → @osi-saf.eumetsat.intAntarctic sea-ice extent has begun declining much earlier than usual and is currently at a level comparable to the record-low year of 2023 at this time of year. @osi-saf.eumetsat.int 🧪🌊❄️
Show PostArctic sea ice is thinner, darker and more mobile than 40 years ago. A review examines changing sea ice at both poles, drawing on CM SAF CLARA-A3 sea-ice albedo data. For #WorldSpaceWeek, explore what long-term observations reveal: doi.org/10.1038/s430...
Show PostArctic sea-ice extent is approaching its annual minimum: - remaining below the climatological values and - currently among the 13 lowest minima on record. Data: @osi-saf.eumetsat.int sea-ice index v3
Show PostSimilarly, Antarctic sea-ice extent is approaching its annual maximum: - remaining well below the climatological values - currently on track for the third-lowest maximum on record. Data: @osi-saf.eumetsat.int sea-ice index v3
Show PostInteresting to compare the 2 sea-ice indices: extent and area. While Arctic sea-ice extent is still approaching its annual minimum, sea-ice area has already passed its minimum. This suggests that initial freeze-up mainly increases ice concentration before expanding the cover. @osi-saf.eumetsat.int
