much of my family's hoard of NES, SNES, Genesis and GB cartridges were picked up used at Record Exchange for .25-$1 each in late 90s-early 00s, as if sprites were going out of style. almost as cheap as piracy
Show PostProbably the 32-bit generation. $40 was as cheap as i ever saw and you could get a used PS1 or N64 for under $100 while they were the current gen. This kind of extended into the PS2/GC/Xbox gen but only because it was so utterly dominated by PS2 causing the low prices. Also 2008 was a recession
Show PostSo my theory is purchasing power, choice, and likelihood you'd get something worthwhile for a low price (some games were $10-15 NEW!) was best during the mid-late 32-bit gen
Show PostIf we take inflation into account, I'd say from ~2005 (360/PS3 era) until about.. 2020. That's considering new games were more or less locked at $50-$60 for nearly 15 years while inflation made them cheaper in terms of real cost. If we calculate inflation the earlier gens were all more costly per $.
