Burnham wants to end “40 years of neoliberalism”. Great. For universities, one very welcome - and stabilising - step would be the re-introduction of the student numbers cap. (Some would stop overflowing; some would stop shrinking; all of them would benefit). Is there a reason this isn’t an easy win?

I thought this was such a good piece - it chimes with how in my research (and my book plug plug) moral liberal education was transformed for the needs of modern liberal capitalism. Warwick, for example, explicitly took on the case-study approach of Harvard et al. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/18/o...

How is my University celebrating English climbing 27 places? Well, it sacked 8 of the 12 of us this summer and is still trying to make me go part-time. I can't see this meteoric rise being sustained. (Note: all league tables are pernicious lies anyway).
