I shouldn't be shocked about this. But also I would point out anything Aryn Rand ever wrote as an example how Trad publishing is not gatekeeping anything but diversity.
Show Postlmao what an epic self-own
Show PostShout-out to a shitty panellist at a con in 2019 who was absolutely shocked at an audience of writers who all wanted to self publish, and said "but without gatekeepers, how will anyone know if a book is good?!" lol. lmao.
Show Postthis is not to dunk on YA because i do think books for teenagers should be written with sincerity and nuance. there are plenty of great ones out there. but it's funny for a genre to arise for a demographic that expressly wants a combination of character writing for kids plus 'spice'
Show Posti don't like to be mean on main but. my one moment of bitchiness. i think the genre term "new adult" is hilarious and so damning. a self own. the way it is used amounts to "the prose, plotting, and emotional nuance of a YA book for teens but with explicit sex". can we be so real
