My parents lived close enough that any noisy toys got the "maybe that can live at nanny and grandpa's house and you can play with it there" treatment. They soon learned.

One more thought--We like to "keep score." Our income level and weight are just two examples from the adult world, and we have strategies that improve our "score." Grades are the way students "keep score," and they learn a good strategy to get a good grade is to submit assignments on time.
