I suspect human beings (maybe all animals) are hard-wired to either bury trauma or normalise it. I can say personally I resolved to 'never forget' the 2020 fires but if I'm honest there's a barely subliminal part of my brain wanting to believe now it wasn't "that bad." Until it happens again 😞

Makes sense to me. There’s a great study I read years ago that I still think about that showed people’s political actions were more influenced by their (often inaccurate) beliefs about the opinions and values of those around them than by their own stated opinions and values.

There was a brief period around the 2019 Bushfires where that seemed to crack (the "arson" narratives never really bit). COVID politics and the Trumpification of social media combined to bury that, I think. And <dons tinfoil hat> Russian and Israeli weaponisation of the meme finished the job.
