I've also always found the relative sparseness in the presentation kind of evocative, too. Things are presented very matter-of-factly and are often unremarked on, so it gets you thinking about the stories of the places you explore, why things are how they are and what they represent, etc.

It's also rather lonesome and even kind of meditative at times, I think. A single, silent hero with an only-vaguely-defined (at most) backstory adds this layer of, like... wondering what they're thinking and feeling over the course of the game, I think, which is neat.

Dragon Quest I does have a really distinct vibe to it, and there is a real charm to its simplicity! The solitary protagonist brings a feel to it a bit like, well, other games with solitary protagonists; in that there is a specific individual character you're "playing as" rather than a whole party.
