[Whispers, so they don't hear] I once accidentally ordered elvers in a restaurant where I didn't speak the language (this was before smart phone translation and the dictionary was no help) and whilst I'll never eat them again, because endangered... it was guiltily delicious. Like fishy spaghetti.

In Gloucester, if a chair with a tea-towel placed over its back was placed on the pavement outside a house, then elvers were for sale. Often, I was sent to buy a pound and always tried to get home before they wriggled to the top of the basin.
