My roommate/labmate and I were once sitting in his office, talking about our laser research (pew pew pew) and we kept periodically hearing some sort of "toot toot" sound which it turns out was one of the boats passing by the city We started saying our advisor was in his office "running simulations"

I never asked about research, but I asked for a paper once when I was in high school. I found the first author's email address and asked for a copy. I was so excited when they replied! I didn't really understand what I was reading, but it was so cool to get that response.
