When we’re prevented from accessing a space where there’s police & members of the public, threatened with arrest if we remain, shot at or hit while visibly marked or clearly working, you are witnessing a textbook indicator of a constitutional crisis that’s about to get much worse.

That is ALSO why it’s notable when police intentionally separate press from protestors, because they are attempting to assert that those they arrest and brutalize deserve it, and you know it’s true because press didn’t also get hit/arrested.

That is why reporting on what police are doing to press happens. It eliminates the spin that attempts to presume that those hurt or arrested had done something to deserve it, makes clear you are witnessing wanton brutality.

Journalists aren’t some special class of people, but their role is unique. It’s supposed to be non-engaged with any party on the ground. Just documenting. When they get injured or arrested, it illustrates the intensity of violence being deployed by the state against everyone else.
