It doesn’t do progressives any good to pretend most of America is deeply impoverished or that poverty is the norm here. A sense of widespread scarcity does not make people more generous. We are a rich nation, most of us are middle class. There is a suffering minority and we can afford to help them.

There’s a tension here, between people who want poverty to be widespread because their politics revolves around the idea of uniting the poor, and people who want poverty to be rare because that means less suffering and makes it easier to help the people left behind.

A progressive agenda rooted in a fiction (like how we’re almost all on the brink of financial disaster) is going to be brittle. Even if it persuades people, the basic principle you’re relying on is “I got mine.” If those people realize they could pull up the ladder behind them, why wouldn’t they?
