this is super reductive, but there’s usually one of a few things going on with any kink you don’t get: •de-fanging something disgusting or terrible. a layer of fiction and play renders them safer •expressing suppressed feelings via play, including dark ones •amplification of a specific sensation

again, super reductive, and these overlap more often than they don’t. my psych focus wasn’t human sexuality; i’m sure someone has a meta-analysis that already lines this out better. but it’s kinda just normal human behavior and repression is actually the weird outlier
