i mean… pinkies do just kinda stick out on their own sometimes. i play harp and i’m forever trying to get my pinky to not stick out. sometimes it sticks out when i’m holding a mug too. maybe it’s that hands just do that, especially when holding a wee dainty cup handle, and then it got exaggerated

My great-grandmother used to raise her pinky while drinking anything, which my mom thought was so refined and tried to copy. Turns out she'd severed a tendon in her pinky as a girl and couldn't really bend it. There's apocryphal origin 20 for you.

Some queen had embarrassingly big hands and couldn't get all her fingers onto the handle of the teacup so she stuck her pinky up in the air to make it look like a thing she was doing ON PURPOSE and everyone imitated her.
