Iran can't possibly blow up LA or San Diego, that's not a threat. The actual harmful part is Trump was negotiating. Trying to go "you don't have leverage over me, I don't care," as if that would alter the dynamic. Similar to when he pretended the Strait of Hormuz doesn't matter. It did not work.
