On the site of the old classrooms it seemed unbelievable to me that the then National Coal Board thought it would be safe to dump coal waste in seven tips high above the village, waste that was notorious for sliding; it was tip Number 7 that overwhelmed Aberfan on October 21, 1966.

The tree of life behind them at the school that was built to replace the one that was buried by slurry, features the names of all those who lost their lives - including Gaynor's young brother & older sister.

I was privileged to meet and interview Jeff Edwards, Gaynor Madgewick and Gerald Kirwan. They were 8 years old when it happened - and somehow they survived.

And then I went to Aberfan in the Welsh Valleys. 60 years ago this coming week, 116 children were killed in the village as they sat in their classrooms at Pantglass Junior School. A coal tip which loomed high above the school collapsed and buried children and adults.
