Shepards of all genders occupy this really narrow sweet spot of being just defined enough as a character to not feel like a blank slate and just customizable enough that your Shepard really feels like YOURS.

Now that I work with VAs regularly I am constantly listening to female action protagonist voice work in a new game and thinking "the casting call said Jennifer Hale's Shepard as the comp"

Not like other games hadn't done the "default male protag but you can make them female if you want ig" thing, though, it's really Hale's voice work that sells it.

And every other character reacts exactly as they would to the male special forces space marine guy most of the actors & animators & writers were probably picturing by default, at least during ME1.

They didn't give Femshep different dialogue or animations from the ones designed for male Shepard, so she talks like someone who expects to be listened to and moves like someone unafraid to take up space.
