I think we are nearing this point, to be frank. In Finland, the public is already questioning why we give €1 million to someone studying literature. What they don't understand is, of course, that this mostly goes to overheads. But it does radically decrease public willingness to pay.

Strongly agree with this. Our overheads are so large that they essentially make it impossible to hire postdocs on the most prestigious local grants. The parasitic drain on these grants is killing them

I know not everyone agrees here, not yet anyways, but AI will eventually allow supercharged non-university researchers to do vastly more cost-efficient (yes, perhaps less ethical, or more problematic!) research. With no bureaucratic costs. Already seen in maths.
